Coding stopped being the bottleneck

12 September 2026 · 4 min read

For twenty years, the person who could write the code held the leverage. If you wanted a tool, you needed someone who could build it, and that scarcity set the price of everything downstream.

That has quietly ended. AI now writes competent code across every common language. A person who understands a business problem can get to a working answer without knowing any of them. The scarce skill has moved: it is no longer typing the code, it is deciding what is worth building and why.

That is a harder skill, and a more durable one. It sits in understanding how a company actually operates, where its time and money leak, and which of those leaks a tool can close. The code is now the easy half of the sentence.
